Roti jala is very popular in Malaysian cuisine—you can find them in local school canteens, at your favourite pasar malam, or any Malay restaurant near you. They’re unique mainly due to their abstract cylindrical pattern, and while some might think it’s a complex dish, they couldn’t be more wrong. All you’ll need are seven ingredients that you can find in your kitchen to whip up this roti jala recipe.

Ingredients

  • 150g of all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp of ground turmeric
  • ¼ tsp of salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 180ml of coconut milk
  • 180ml of water
  • Vegetable oil (for greasing)

  • 1 bowl
  • 1 sieve
  • 1 strainer
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 non-stick pan
  • 1 roti jala mould

Directions

  • In a bowl, sift the flour and ground turmeric, and add salt.
  • Pour in the beaten egg, coconut milk, and water. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
  • Pour the batter through a strainer into a measuring cup.
  • In a non-stick pan over medium heat, grease the surface with vegetable oil.
  • Pour the batter into the roti jala mould until it is half full.
  • Move the cup in circular motions over the pan to form a lacy pattern and cook for 2 minutes. Transfer the roti jala onto a plate and repeat with the remaining batter.
  • For each piece of roti jala, fold the right and left sides in before rolling it upwards to form a log.
  • Serve immediately with the curry of your choice.
