It is black tea simmered in milk and spices and traditionally sweetened with sugar. However, with this masala tea recipe, you can choose to make this dairy-free and naturally sweetened!

Ingredients

  • 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • 6 to 8 green cardamom pods
  • 2.8g of whole black peppercorn
  • 3 to 4 whole cloves
  • 600ml of water
  • 12g of grated ginger
  • 18g of loose black tea leaves or 3 to 4 black tea bags
  • 480ml of milk of your choice (whole milk or dairy-free milk)
  • Sweetener of your choice (maple syrup, sugar, or organic cane sugar)

  • 1 mortar and pestle
  • 1 medium saucepan with lid
  • 1 fine mesh strainer

Masala Tea Recipe

Directions

  • Lightly crush the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, whole black peppercorns, and cloves with a mortar and pestle. Be careful not to grind them into powder.
  • Add the crushed spices, water, and grated ginger to a medium saucepan and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and simmer it for 15 minutes.
  • Add the tea, either loose leaves or tea bags, and milk of choice and lower the heat to low. Cover the pot with a lid, let the mixture cook for 5 minutes, turn off the heat, and steep it for 5 minutes.
  • Add the sweetener of choice to taste and strain the tea through a fine-mesh strainer.
  • Serve immediately or let it cool and store in the refrigerator.
