Tteokbokki Recipe

Tteokbokki is a staple in Korean cuisine. It is simple, quick to make, and is guaranteed to make your tummy full and happy. You can find tteokbokki just about anywhere nowadays—they’re available at grocery stores, at your local Korean marts, or if you’re in Korea, they’re known to be a very popular street food too! Here’s our take on the tteokbokki recipe.

Ingredients

  • 710ml of water
  • 5g of dried kelp
  • 15g of dried anchovies
  • 3 tbsp of gochujang (spicy Korean paste)
  • 1 ½ tbsp of sugar
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp of gochugaru (chilli powder)
  • 350g of Korean rice cakes
  • 150g of Korean fish cakes, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 60g onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 stalk of green onion, chopped

  • 1 pot
  • 1 muslin cloth
  • 1 pan
  • 1 spatula

Tteokbokki Recipe

Directions

  • In a bowl, add warm water and soak the dried kelp.
  • Remove the head and black innards of the dried anchovies and add them to the bowl.
  • On medium-low heat, add the mixture and bring to a boil for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the kelp and continue boiling the anchovies for another 10 minutes, but on low heat.
  • Remove the anchovies and sieve the stock through a muslin cloth. Set aside.
  • In a bowl, add gochujang, sugar, minced garlic, and gochugaru. Mix until combined.
  • In a pan, add the soup stock and boil over medium-high heat.
  • Add in the sauce mixture and stir it until it dissolves completely.
  • Bring the seasoned stock to a boil and add rice cakes, fish cakes and sliced onions. Let it cook for 5 minutes.
  • Turn the heat down to low and let the stock simmer and thicken.
  • Transfer it to a serving plate, garnish with the chopped green onions and serve!

Tteokbokki alternative

If you want to prepare this tteokbokki recipe but ran out of Korean rice cakes at home, a new and popular alternative that’s been recently discovered is to use rice paper instead! Dip the rice paper in water, roll it up and slice it to your desired size. They’re easy to make, chewy, and tastes just about the same.
