Mobile users can now order meals directly from foodpanda.my restaurants

April 10th, 2013

LOCAL food delivery e-commerce website foodpanda.my recently launched an application for iOS and Android devices.

The app will allow mobile device users to make direct orders from the list of 200 restaurants.

“We believe this will provide increased convenience and a new channel for our customers to order food from our restaurants,” said marketing director Sidney Ng.

“This will also add immense value to our partner restaurants, in addition to attracting more orders.

“It will also act as an advertising channel for restaurants and allow hungry customers to look for great restaurants in areas where we deliver,” foodpanda.my co-founder and managing director Claudio Abitante said.

“This is because, in addition to being able to order food from our website and app, we also display the restaurant’s address and food prices.

“As our prices are similar to those on the restaurant’s menu, customers can decide what they want to eat before stepping into a restaurant,” he explained.  (....)

foodpanda app goes global

March 7th, 2013

Food delivery e-commerce establishment foodpanda.my launched its iOS and Android applications, allowing orders to be made from all its 200 restaurants on mobile devices.

The app, according to marketing director Sidney Ng, provides convenience to customers and acts as an advertising channel for restaurants.

He told A+M that foodpanda is exploring in-app advertising in the near future, providing that opportunity first for their vendors.

For now, it will focus on getting people familiar with ordering through the new app, which has been in its pipeline for some time now.

"We've been around for a year but we were waiting till we have a significant amount of vendors before launching the app. So with many on board now, it was finally a good time to launch," said Ng.

Ng explains that it previously had a mobile site, but also received feedback and requests from consumers for an app.

foodpanda recently launched its take-away and pre-order feature online, allowing customers to order food two days in advance or pre-order to collect their food at restaurants.   (....)

Rocket Internet's Hellofood / foodpanda launches 1st mobile app; spreads to 2 new countries in Latin America

March 5th, 2013

Rocket Internet-backed foodpanda (Hellofood in some countries), an online platform for aggregating and delivering food from take-out restaurants, launched its first mobile app on Android and iOS. It has also expanded into two more emerging markets - Argentina and Venezuela, thereby expanding its operations in Latin America and bringing its total operational footprint to 25 markets globally.

It is now officially the online food delivery service with the widest geographical reach compared to the likes of GrubHub in the U.S., or Just-Eat or Delivery Hero in Europe.

The app lets users specify their area and then lists all the available restaurants nearby. Once an order is placed, the user receives a notification with their order details and an expected delivery time.

The new foodpanda app is available in 14 markets initially, namely: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal and Russia. Within the next two weeks, foodpanda said the app will also be available in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Hungary and Poland.

Just last month, we reported that Ralf Wenzel was engaged as the new MD.

foodpanda operates under a variety of brand names in the different markets, including hellofood and HungryPanda. The full list of markets it operates in is as follows: Argentina, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal.

The spokesman would not confirm how many orders foodpanda has processed since launch, or how many registered users it has. We also asked about its funding level to date and were told funding will be announced “within the next weeks”. foodpanda is currently in the process of raising money to help fuel continued growth.

Rocket Internet’s foodpanda rapidly expands – launches in 12 new countries

February 6th, 2013

Rocket Internet’s online food delivery platform foodpanda is expanding to twelve new countries, bringing the total markets the company is in to 23. New managing director Ralf Wenzel is heading the global roll-out.

The platform is moving fast on its global roll-out. Over the past few weeks, it launched in Brazil, Chile, Ghana, Hungary, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, Senegal and Ukraine.

foodpanda is focusing on the lucrative emerging markets in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America, where the internet scene is rapidly growing.

Known for their huge funding rounds, Rocket Internet is now actively seeking financing to aide the rapid growth of foodpanda. This shouldn’t be too much of a challenge, considering prior investments in Rocket Internet portfolio companies include $65m for Dafiti and $40m for South-East Asian Amazon clone, Lazada.

Heading the foodpanda expansion is new global managing director Ralf Wenzel, who will launch the platform in more countries in the future. Prior to foodpanda, Wenzel held the position of senior vice president at Rocket Internet-launched Jamba/Jamster.

foodpanda is part of a group of Rocket-backed food ordering platforms (HungryPanda, HelloFood etc) worldwide.

The expansion news is another sign that the online food delivery marketplace is heating up. Just last week, fellow Berlin-headquartered service Delivery Hero announced a takeover of UK rival Hungryhouse and Eatitnow.

foodpanda is taking a more aggressive approach to expansion in comparison to Delivery Hero, which is currently available in 12 countries across Europe, Australia, South Korea, China and Mexico.

As for who might be investing this time around, Rocket tends to turn to a number of repeat investors, including JP Morgan, Holtzbrinck, and Tengelmann. Like other Samwer/Rocket ventures, foodpanda is getting a lot of mileage out of bringing successful e-commerce business ideas — in this case, offering a logistics, online ordering and analytics backbones to take-out food businesses — in markets that its would-be rivals have yet to tackle. foodpanda’s new markets include Brazil, Chile, Ghana, Hungary, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, Senegal and Ukraine, where it operates under a variety of brands.
