Make homemade chapati with our quick and straightforward chapati recipe! Chapati is a soft Indian flatbread made from only three ingredients - whole wheat flour, salt, and water. Chapati is often enjoyed with some butter or ghee and, of course, curries. Dip your chapati in saucy Indian dishes like butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and dhal.
Sift the flour into a large bowl, add salt and mix well, then add water and gently stir it with your fingers in a circular motion until the flour gathers.
Dust 20g of whole wheat flour on the counter and knead your dough until it becomes soft and pliable.
Cover the dough with cling wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 1 hour.
Divide the dough into 10 to 12 portions, roll them into balls, and flatten them with your hands.
Transfer them to a clean surface and roll each one out into a 16cm wide circle with a rolling pin.
Heat the skillet over medium heat, place the chapati on it, cook for 30 seconds and flip it over. Flip it again, and the chapati will puff into a ball. Note: There’s a chance the chapati won’t puff up, and that’s ok; it’ll still taste good.
Remove the chapati from the skillet and gently press it with a kitchen towel to release the air.
Serve immediately.
Pointers for Chapati
Remember to sift your whole wheat flour when making chapati; it will help make the chapati softer. Also, add a little bit of flour or water if you find the dough too wet or too dry. If you’re too busy to knead the dough by hand, you can use a dough mixer instead. The results will be similar. Lastly, when rolling out the dough, roll the edges first and then the rest.
